Hear from Kalisolaite ‘Uhila in conversation with Angela Tiatia, as they discuss ‘Uhila’s new exhibition ‘Koe tenga tete to tete utu pe koia’ (the seed you sow you will reap) at UNSW Galleries.

‘Koe tenga tete to tete utu pe koia’ emerges from the artist’s return to Mildura, Australia, in 2025—almost three decades after living and working in the city as a teenager. Across performance, installation, video and sound, the exhibition sees ‘Uhila retrace this formative period, reconsidering how acts of labour and care continue to inform his practice. Together, ‘Uhila and Tiatia reflect on endurance and embodiment in performance, and consider how memory, labour, and kinship shape their respective practices.

This program is part of ‘Artist to Artist’, an ongoing series of conversations at UNSW Galleries, bringing together practitioners with shared interests and material concerns.

Kalisolaite 'Uhila is a Tongan-born artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, Aotearoa. His practice revolves around performance and engages with endurance, silence, and social critique. ‘Uhila’s durational performance works are often informed by his Tongan heritage, and explore ideas of tradition, masculinity, and cultural bias. Through his performance works, he often seeks to promote a sense of understanding and togetherness.

Angela Tiatia is a Sāmoan/Australian artist living and working in Sydney. Over the past two decades, Tiatia has developed a research-driven practice spanning moving image, photography, performance, and installation. Her work examines global power structures and their impact on Pasifika communities, tracing the relationships between representation and gender, neo-colonialism, climate change, and the commodification of body and place. Drawing on history, popular culture, and material culture, Tiatia moves fluidly across photography and moving image practices, shifting from intimate detail to expansive, macro perspectives.
