Europe, Refugees and our Obsession with Borders: A Crisis of Political Courage

Join us for a public lecture by Dr François Gemenne, a world authority on climate change and disaster-related migration. Dr Gemenne is a leading specialist in environmental geopolitics and migration governance, and a scientific consultant for the major exhibition EXIT, part of the Sydney Festival and currently showing in UNSW Galleries.

Dr Gemenne’s research deals with populations displaced by environmental changes and policies of adaptation to climate change.  During his career, Dr Gemenne has conducted field studies in Tuvalu, China, Kyrgyzstan, the Maldives, Mauritius, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and in Japan after the Fukushima disaster.

Participants in this event will also have an opportunity to view EXIT prior to Dr Gemenne’s lecture. Commissioned by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, EXIT is an immersive, 360 degree audio-visual experience exploring the social and economic consequences of current global-scale human migration trends. The exhibition is a picture of the world in trouble.

Presented in conjunction with 'EXIT' at UNSW Galleries.

'EXIT' visually correlates global human migratory trends with urgent social and economic issues: increasing urbanisation, economic displacement, political disruption, climate change, natural disasters, and deforestation.
