Kynan Tan's practice investigates the materials, conditions, and relations of data through the creation of computer-generated artworks. Using data visualisation, 3D simulation, and audiovisual transductions, Tan questions the becoming-sensory of data.

Data itself lacks an intrinsic materiality or sensibility, yet is involved directly and indirectly in the generation of much of what we perceive. Software and hardware are commonly engineered as opaque 'black boxes', systems with identifiable inputs and outputs, but obscured internal operations.

Through digitally-generated visualisation and simulation, this exhibition draws attention to the processes, conditions and events that imbue data and computation with sensory modalities. Techniques of non-visualisation are explored to emphasise the lack of sensibility or cognitive insight of data itself. By creating simulations of data centres, data archives, and hard drive destruction, Tan articulates the paradoxical ephemerality and materiality of data.
