Bronwyn Bain's installation 'Portolano' embodies her belief that spirituality is the pivotal force in every aspect of life. For her, artistic and spiritual contemplation are inseparable. Bain's work is informed by this theory but not illustrative of it. Bain's Journey that has culminated in this installation began four years ago in 1996 in Melbourne She was studying electronic design and interactive media at Victoria University and felt the need to return to fine art practise. 

In 1997 Bain was accepted at II Laboratory per Alfresco di Vainella in Tuscany, Italy, to learn the many techniques of fresco.
